PAID SEARCH GUIDE FOR THE TRADES

Local Services Ads vs Google Ads: which should contractors use?

A clear comparison for roofing, HVAC and plumbing companies choosing between pay-per-lead visibility and more controllable search campaigns.

Use Local Services Ads when your trade and location are eligible, the business can complete Google’s screening, and you want a relatively direct pay-per-lead route to local enquiries. Use standard Google Search Ads when you need tighter control over searches, services, offers, landing pages and conversion goals. Many established contractors should test both, but only after they can identify which calls become qualified opportunities, appointments and won jobs.

The short answerLocal Services Ads are not a replacement for all Google Ads, and “pay per lead” does not mean “pay per booked job.” Search Ads are not automatically wasteful because they charge for clicks. Judge each channel by fully loaded cost per qualified opportunity and acquired job—not by the platform’s billing event.

The two products can appear in the same search journey, but they solve different problems. Local Services Ads package trust information, local coverage and direct contact into a structured listing. Search Ads let an advertiser build a more customised route from a query to an ad, landing page and conversion.

That distinction matters for a contractor. A plumber answering urgent calls may value immediacy and simple phone leads. A roofing company may need a landing page that explains financing, storm inspections or commercial capability. An HVAC operator may want separate campaigns for no-cool repair, replacement and maintenance memberships. The service mix should choose the tool—not the other way around.

Local Services Ads and Search Ads at a glance

How Local Services Ads work

Google describes Local Services Ads as local placements where businesses pay when potential customers get in touch, rather than paying simply for a click. Leads can arrive through supported contact routes such as calls, messages or bookings, depending on the market and category.

The product is built around job types and service areas. A contractor sets the work it wants and where it operates, completes the applicable verification process, establishes a budget and manages incoming leads. It is deliberately less like a blank advertising canvas than a Search campaign.

That simplicity is attractive, but it does not remove the work. The profile must match the real business. Calls need to be answered. Job types need review. Lead records need disposition. Reviews, responsiveness, profile quality, bidding and other marketplace conditions can influence performance.

How standard Google Search Ads work

Search Ads allow a contractor to bid for visibility around relevant searches and send the visitor to a selected website page. The advertiser can organise campaigns by service and market, choose keyword matching, exclude irrelevant searches, write multiple ad messages and define which actions count as conversions.

The click is the billing event in common Search setups, not the business outcome. A click can become a call, form, scheduled estimate or nothing. This is why landing-page quality, mobile usability and conversion tracking carry more weight in the operating model.

Search campaigns demand more management, but that control can be valuable. A roofer can separate repair from replacement. An HVAC company can direct heat-pump searches to a page that answers installation questions. A plumber can exclude product, DIY and employment terms before they consume more budget.

Which usually produces better leads?

There is no honest universal answer. Lead quality depends on the service, location, searcher, profile, targeting, landing page, competitive set and how the business defines “good.”

Local Services can put a ready-to-contact customer close to the business information they need. It can also produce calls for a service the contractor temporarily cannot accept, price shoppers, enquiries outside a practical dispatch boundary or people who misunderstand the listing.

Search Ads can intercept more specific intent and pre-qualify visitors through a landing page. They can also pay for irrelevant clicks when keywords, negatives, geography or copy are poorly controlled.

Compare the same stages for both channels: raw lead, connected conversation, qualified opportunity, booked appointment or estimate, won job and gross profit. Our guide to finding the leak between leads and booked jobs gives teams a shared definition for those stages.

Is pay per lead safer than pay per click?

It moves the billing point further down the journey, which can feel safer. It does not transfer the entire commercial risk to Google. A valid paid lead may still fail qualification or never book.

Google’s Local Services documentation says lead prices can vary by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. The dashboard reports spend and leads, while the contractor must record what happened afterwards.

For Search Ads, cost per click is an input. The useful outputs are cost per qualified opportunity and cost per acquired job. A high click cost can support profitable work; a low lead price can still waste money if the calls are consistently wrong.

Can you dispute bad Local Services leads?

Google currently provides a lead-dispute and credit process for eligible cases in the United States and Canada. Its help documentation says successfully disputed leads are credited and notes that the feature is not universally available.

A disagreement with the caller is not automatically an invalid lead. Train whoever reviews leads to use Google’s current categories and submit evidence promptly. Also tag the operational reason internally: wrong service, wrong location, solicitation, duplicate, unreachable or simply not booked. Those labels reveal whether the problem belongs to targeting, policy eligibility, intake or normal sales variance.

UK advertisers should not assume the US and Canadian dispute workflow applies. Product features differ by market, and Google changes them. Check the live account and current help page before building a financial forecast around credits.

What verification does Local Services require?

Every participating business goes through screening and verification appropriate to its category and location. Google says this can include checks of business registration, licences, insurance, owners, employees or contractors, and other eligibility information. Requirements are not identical for every advertiser.

Google has introduced the Google Verified badge for eligible advertisers that complete the required checks. The badge is a verification signal—not a promise about workmanship, lead volume or ranking.

What makes Local Services Ads rank?

Local Services Ads do not operate as a first-come directory. Google’s ranking documentation refers to bid, responsiveness, profile quality, reviews, images, verification and other information that can affect customer preference. Market conditions and relevance also matter.

That creates a useful operating rule: do not leave the ads active when nobody can respond reasonably. Use an ad schedule that reflects real coverage, pause unavailable job types, keep notifications working and review the inbox every day. Buying a higher bid cannot compensate for consistently poor handling.

Reviews should come from genuine customers without incentives or selective pressure. Profile photos should show the real crews and work. These are trust practices first; treating them as a mechanical ranking trick usually produces worse customer experiences.

Where Search Ads offer more control

Service-level intent

Search campaigns can isolate roof repair, AC replacement, boiler service or sewer-line work and give each a budget, message and page. That matters when job economics vary widely.

Negative targeting

Search-term review can identify DIY, jobs, training, parts and unsupported services. Negative keywords reduce obvious mismatch while preserving useful demand.

Landing-page qualification

A dedicated page can state territory, customer type, financing, emergency availability, exclusions and proof before the prospect calls. The page should answer real questions, not bury the phone number beneath generic copy.

Conversion strategy

Google Ads supports conversion goals for valuable actions such as calls and forms, plus later offline outcomes. Contractors can feed qualified-lead or booked-job information back when the technical and consent requirements are met.

Should a contractor run both?

Often yes, after measurement is ready. The channels can cover different placements and search behaviour. Local Services may capture direct, high-intent contacts; Search Ads can address services or propositions that need a more explanatory page.

Do not split a small budget automatically. Give each channel a defined job:

A 30-day test without muddying the result

Before launch

Confirm capacity, priority services, territory, call coverage and a complete budget. Verify that the Local Services account and Business Profile represent the same real business. Test every Search landing page and conversion action.

During the test

Label every lead by channel and outcome. Review wrong-service and wrong-area enquiries daily. Do not change bids, coverage, services and landing pages all at once; you will lose the ability to explain what moved.

At the end

Compare complete spend, qualified opportunities, bookings, won jobs and gross profit where available. Record missed calls and capacity declines separately. Decide whether to scale, fix, narrow or pause each service-channel combination.

Our home-service marketing budget guide includes the backward calculation from target jobs to an allowable acquisition cost.

How the choice changes by trade

Roofing

Local Services can suit direct inspection and repair demand where available. Search Ads can be useful when storm, retail replacement, repair and commercial propositions require different pages and qualification. A roofing marketing plan should also account for estimator capacity after major weather.

HVAC and heating

Urgent no-cool or no-heat enquiries may fit direct lead formats, while replacement systems, heat pumps, boilers and maintenance offers benefit from clearer segmentation. See how those journeys connect in our HVAC marketing approach.

Plumbing

Emergency calls reward tight schedules and rapid response. Search Ads add control when drain, sewer, repiping, installation and commercial services have different economics. Our plumbing marketing page maps the path from search to booked work.

United States, Canada and United Kingdom

United States

Eligibility and verification can vary by state, category and market. Lead disputes are available for eligible cases; verify licensing, insurance and background-check requirements inside the account.

Canada

Check category and city availability, provincial requirements and practical travel territory. Google’s current help documentation includes eligible lead disputes in Canada.

United Kingdom

Adapt services and language to boilers, heating engineers, postcodes and call-out coverage. Do not assume North American booking or dispute features are available.

Frequently asked questions

Are Local Services Ads better than Google Search Ads for contractors?

Neither is universally better. Local Services Ads offer a simpler pay-per-lead route for eligible, verified businesses. Search Ads provide more control over keywords, ad messages, landing pages and conversion strategy. The better choice depends on eligibility, service mix, lead quality, measurement and capacity.

Can a contractor run Local Services Ads and Google Search Ads together?

Yes. An eligible contractor can use both to cover different search placements and demand. Keep budgets, lead sources and booked-job outcomes separate so the channels can be compared without double-counting.

Do Local Services Ads charge per click or per lead?

Google charges for valid leads received through Local Services Ads. Standard Search campaigns commonly charge for ad clicks. A paid lead is still not necessarily qualified or booked, so contractors should track outcomes beyond the platform event.

Do contractors need verification for Local Services Ads?

Yes. Google requires participating businesses to complete applicable screening and verification. Checks can vary by business category and location and may involve business registration, licensing, insurance or background screening.
