CAMPAIGN CHOICE FOR HOME SERVICES

Performance Max or Search Ads: which should contractors use?

A practical decision framework for local roofing, HVAC and plumbing campaigns—without pretending one campaign type wins everywhere.

Most local contractors should establish a well-measured Search campaign before making Performance Max the centre of lead generation. Search provides a clearer view of the queries, services and landing pages tied to active demand. Performance Max can then expand reach across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps when the account can distinguish qualified opportunities from weak forms, spam and wrong-area calls.

The short answerChoose Search first when the budget is limited, services are urgent and you need tighter control over intent. Add or test Performance Max when tracking is reliable, creative assets are strong, geography is clean and deeper lead outcomes can guide automation. Run both only when each has a defined job and results are judged by bookings and won work.

The choice is often presented as “manual control versus AI.” That is too simple. Search campaigns also use automated bidding and broad matching, while Performance Max includes controls such as search themes, brand exclusions and negative keywords. The real difference is how widely each campaign can look for customers and how directly the advertiser can shape search intent.

What Search campaigns do well

Search campaigns are built around queries people type into Google. Contractors choose keywords, match types, ads, landing pages, location settings and conversion goals. That makes them useful for high-intent services such as “emergency plumber,” “AC repair” or “roof leak repair,” where the business wants to understand what triggered the ad.

Search is not perfect control. Match types can reach queries beyond the literal keyword, automated bidding changes auction participation, and location signals are not exact. But the search terms report and keyword structure give an owner a relatively direct way to ask whether spend matches the services the crew wants.

Search usually deserves priority when:

What Performance Max changes

Performance Max uses one campaign to access Google's inventory across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Google uses goals, bidding, creative assets, landing pages, audience signals and other context to seek conversions or conversion value.

That wider reach can find customers outside a narrow keyword list. A homeowner may watch a maintenance video, see a visual ad and later request an HVAC estimate. A roofer may reach demand connected to storm damage or a replacement journey before the final “roofer near me” search.

The trade-off is that channel and query control are less central than in a conventional Search structure. More reach is useful only when the system is optimizing toward outcomes the contractor values. If every form is primary, Performance Max can find more forms without finding more good jobs.

Performance Max should not be a shortcut around weak tracking

Google's lead-generation guidance recommends using goals such as qualified lead or converted lead and optimizing to deeper-funnel actions where possible. It also advises choosing the goal closest to a sale or closed deal when that action has enough recent volume.

For a contractor, the conversion hierarchy should separate:

Do not mark every stage as equally important. A job applicant, vendor call and out-of-area request should not teach the campaign the same lesson as a booked replacement estimate. Our call-tracking guide explains how to pass useful outcomes through the lead journey.

How Search and Performance Max interact

Running both does not mean they independently bid on every identical query. Google says an eligible Search keyword that exactly matches, or is spell-corrected to match, a person's query is prioritized over Performance Max. When there is no identical eligible keyword or search theme, Ad Rank and campaign eligibility can affect which campaign serves.

Search themes in Performance Max let advertisers provide words and phrases customers may search. Google describes them as optional, additive signals. They can help with a new service, niche terminology or business context that the website does not make obvious. They do not turn Performance Max into a keyword-led Search campaign.

Keep campaign roles understandable. Search might protect high-intent plumbing repair and boiler replacement queries. Performance Max might test incremental demand using complete creative assets and a qualified-lead goal. If both are simply told to “get leads,” the account can report growth without revealing whether new demand was actually created.

Brand traffic can make Performance Max look better than it is

People searching the company name already know the business. Those conversions may be valuable, but they do not prove a campaign created new demand. If branded searches are mixed with non-brand discovery, the reported cost per lead can appear unusually strong.

Google recommends brand exclusions when advertisers want to prevent Performance Max from serving on specified brand searches, including their own brand. A contractor may instead choose to allow brand traffic, but the decision should be deliberate and reported separately. Our contractor brand-bidding guide explains how to test whether paid coverage adds bookings or shifts credit from organic demand.

Ask the agency whether branded conversions, returning customers and Google Business Profile demand are influencing the result. “Performance Max has the lowest CPL” is incomplete until the source and quality of those leads are understood.

Final URL expansion can change where traffic lands

Performance Max may use pages beyond one supplied final URL when final URL expansion is enabled. That can help match traffic to a relevant service page, but it can also expose weak blog posts, recruitment pages or services the branch does not offer.

Review page feeds and URL exclusions where applicable. Keep job, careers, privacy, financing-login and unrelated informational pages out of acquisition paths when they cannot produce the intended conversion. Every eligible landing page should state the service, territory, proof and next step clearly.

Creative coverage matters more in Performance Max

Search can operate primarily through text assets. Performance Max reaches visual placements, so images and video affect how the business appears across channels. Generic stock imagery, mismatched trades and auto-generated assets can weaken trust even if the campaign produces clicks.

Provide real, permissioned material: technicians, vehicles, equipment, completed work, customer-facing process and correctly sized brand assets. Do not manufacture reviews, certifications or before-and-after results. Creative should make the offer clearer, not merely fill Google's asset checklist.

When a contractor should not launch Performance Max yet

Fixing these conditions is not anti-automation. It gives automation a business outcome worth pursuing.

A sensible test design

  1. Protect the baseline. Keep the stable Search campaign and record qualified leads, bookings and won jobs before the test.
  2. Give Performance Max one job. Choose a service, territory and conversion goal rather than mixing every branch and service.
  3. Clean conversion goals. Use campaign-specific goals and import qualified or converted lead outcomes where feasible.
  4. Supply complete assets. Use accurate text, images, video and landing pages for the selected service.
  5. Control brand and URLs. Decide whether brand traffic belongs and review final URL expansion.
  6. Hold other variables steady. Avoid changing budget, geography, offer and intake process together.
  7. Allow a meaningful learning period. Google recommends running a new Performance Max campaign for at least six weeks and avoiding frequent major changes during that period.
  8. Judge incrementality cautiously. Compare total qualified opportunities and won work, not just the campaign's reported conversions.

Trade-specific decisions

Roofing

Search is useful for repair, inspection and replacement intent. Performance Max may broaden reach for considered replacements or storm-related demand, but separate branded searches and long-cycle form quality.

HVAC

Protect urgent repair queries in Search. Test Performance Max for replacement, maintenance or financing-led demand when seasonal budgets, creative and qualified-lead feedback are ready.

Plumbing

Keep emergency, drain and water-heater intent tightly structured. Broader reach is difficult to value when all phone calls count alike, so qualify service, location and booking outcome first.

US, Canada and UK checks

United States: separate branches, states, licence coverage and Local Services Ads where used. Do not assume Performance Max replaces the economics or verification model of LSA.

Canada: align province, language, service radius and seasonal capacity. Make creative and landing pages match the branch that can fulfil the enquiry.

United Kingdom: use realistic postcode coverage, trade-specific terminology and relevant credentials. Keep emergency call-outs distinct from larger quoted work.

What to ask the agency

If the answer is only “Performance Max uses AI,” the campaign has not been connected to the contractor's operating reality.

Frequently asked questions

Is Performance Max better than Search Ads for contractors?

Not universally. Search usually offers a clearer starting point for contractors that need tight control over urgent service queries, geography and limited budgets. Performance Max can add reach when conversion tracking, creative assets and lead-quality feedback are reliable.

Can contractors run Search and Performance Max together?

Yes. Google describes Performance Max as complementary to Search. An eligible Search keyword identical to the query is prioritized over Performance Max; otherwise campaign eligibility and Ad Rank can determine which campaign serves.

Does Performance Max use keywords?

Performance Max is keywordless, but optional search themes can provide words and phrases customers are likely to use. Search themes are guidance, not the same control model as building a Search campaign around keywords and match types.

When should a contractor test Performance Max?

Test it after calls and forms are tracked accurately, qualified or converted lead outcomes can be returned where possible, the website and creative assets are credible, geographic settings are correct and the budget can support a controlled comparison.
