Contractors should not enable AI Max simply because Google recommends it or because an existing campaign has been upgraded. AI Max can find additional searches, generate tailored ad text and choose different landing pages—but those benefits depend on accurate conversion signals, a clean website and controls reflecting the jobs the business actually wants. Treat it as a measurable expansion of Search, not a substitute for campaign judgment.
This matters now because Google began automatically upgrading eligible Search campaigns using Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad-match setting in September 2026. Google said eligible upgrades were expected to conclude by the end of September. An owner may therefore encounter AI Max without deliberately rebuilding a campaign.
The upgrade is not proof that performance improved or declined. It changes where several automation settings live and makes them easier to apply together. The business must still decide whether broader reach, generated messaging and flexible landing pages fit its services, territory and measurement.
What AI Max changes inside Search
Search-term matching
AI Max can expand beyond existing keywords using broad-match and keywordless technology. Google says it learns from keywords, ads and URLs to find additional relevant queries. Search-term matching is enabled at campaign level and can then be switched off for individual ad groups.
For a plumber, that might discover an unfamiliar way homeowners describe a blocked sewer. For a roofer, it might connect storm language on a service page with a query missing from the keyword list. The risk is equally practical: poor conversion data can teach the system that any long phone call is valuable, including applicants, suppliers and out-of-area callers.
Text customization
Text customization can generate assets from existing ads, landing-page copy, keywords and other eligible material. Google provides text guidelines for restricted terms, tone and messaging limits. Generated text cannot rescue ambiguous website copy; it scales what the system can infer from the site.
Audit the website first. Remove unsupported claims such as “number one,” “lowest price,” “24/7” or “same-day” when the company cannot consistently honour them. Check financing, warranties, credentials and service promises. AI-written text still represents the contractor.
Final URL expansion
Final URL expansion can send a searcher to another page on the advertiser's domain when Google predicts that page is more relevant. It requires text customization so the ad can match the selected page. Google states that pinned responsive-search-ad assets may not be respected when a different URL is selected.
This can help an HVAC site with separate repair, replacement and maintenance pages. It is risky when the domain includes careers, suppliers, outdated offers, old territories, services a branch no longer performs or thin blog posts. Use campaign-level URL exclusions and suitable ad-group URL inclusions to keep traffic inside a defensible page set.
Brand and location controls
AI Max includes brand inclusions and exclusions. Google documents exclusions as campaign-level controls; inclusions can operate at campaign or ad-group level. It also adds locations of interest at ad-group level for geographic intent in keywordless matches.
Geographic intent is not the same as physical presence. Someone outside the dispatch area can search about a target city. Preserve the account's advanced location settings and compare actual lead addresses with the service map. Our location-targeting guide explains that audit.
AI Max is not Performance Max
AI Max enhances a Search campaign and retains its campaign and ad-group structure. Performance Max is a separate campaign type that can reach people across multiple Google channels.
Google says that when AI Max for Search and Performance Max are both eligible for a query, the candidate with the highest Ad Rank can serve, similar to broad match interacting with Performance Max. If both chase the same weak conversion, a lower reported CPL cannot tell an owner whether demand expanded or merely shifted between campaigns.
See our Performance Max versus Search guide for the wider campaign decision. AI Max asks how much automation to permit inside Search.
Which contractors are ready to test it?
- Calls and forms are tested and deduplicated.
- The CRM records qualified, booked and won outcomes consistently.
- Primary conversions represent business value rather than every click.
- Service, location and exclusion pages are current.
- The website contains accurate language AI can safely reuse.
- Negative keywords and search terms receive regular review.
- Each ad group has a coherent service theme.
- The budget can support a control and treatment.
- The business can leave the test stable long enough to judge it.
A mature account is not necessarily a large account. It is one where the team knows what happened after the inquiry. Twenty clean opportunities can be more useful than 100 conversions mixing good calls, spam, job seekers and duplicate forms.
When to keep it off or limit its features
- Manual CPC is essential. Google says AI Max search-term matching does not work with manual CPC because it relies on automated bidding signals.
- The site is messy. Old services, copied city pages, recruitment content or inaccurate promises give automation poor material.
- Phone rings are the only success signal. Broader matching may find more calls without finding more suitable jobs.
- Exact wording is mandatory. Final URL expansion can bypass pinned assets when another page is selected.
- Tracking templates are fragile. Google warns dynamic landing pages can fail when templates are incompatible.
- The territory is tightly restricted. Geographic-intent expansion needs close checking against customer addresses and licensing limits.
Every feature does not have to be active everywhere. Search-term matching can be disabled by ad group, while text customization and Final URL expansion have their own campaign controls. Use that granularity when one service is ready and another is not.
How to run a useful AI Max test
Google offers an AI Max experiment that splits traffic between the existing Search setup and a treatment with AI Max. By default, the treatment enables search-term matching, text customization and Final URL expansion, although controls can be adjusted. Eligibility limitations include certain shared budgets, portfolio bid strategies, active experiments and Search campaigns targeting the Display network.
- Record the baseline. Capture qualified leads, bookings, wins, spend and revenue status by service.
- Fix conversion goals. Keep weak micro-actions secondary and return deeper lead outcomes where the technical and consent setup supports it.
- Review every eligible page. Exclude careers, privacy, login, unsupported territory, expired offer and irrelevant article pages.
- Document controls. Save the location settings, brand lists, negative keywords, text guidelines and URL rules.
- Choose one question. For example: can AI Max generate more qualified AC-repair bookings at an acceptable acquisition cost?
- Avoid concurrent rebuilds. Do not change offers, pages, intake and budget halfway through, then credit AI Max.
- Allow ramp-up. Google's reporting guidance says to wait at least two weeks after enabling AI Max before changes such as adding negatives. Immediate brand-safety problems still require action.
- Judge downstream quality. Compare qualified rate, booking rate, wins and full acquisition cost—not clicks or raw conversions.
Which reports should you inspect?
AI Max reporting shows more of why traffic matched and what people saw. The search terms report can identify AI Max terms and distinguish broad-match expansion from keywordless matching. A combined view shows the query, headline and landing page. Landing-page and asset reports add more context.
Use the reports to ask:
- Did the query describe work this crew performs?
- Did the generated headline make an accurate promise?
- Did the selected page match the service and territory?
- Did the inquiry qualify and become a booking?
The first three answers sit inside Google Ads. The fourth normally lives in the CRM. Our lead-report reconciliation guide connects those records without pretending every platform should show the same total.
Trade-specific watch-outs
Roofing
Separate urgent repair, replacement and storm intent. Exclude recruitment and DIY content. Watch insurance language and prevent old storm pages from becoming accidental destinations.
HVAC
Keep repair, installation and maintenance distinct. Seasonal offers and financing terms must remain current across every page Final URL expansion can select.
Plumbing
Do not let a broad emergency theme absorb drain, repipe and water-heater budgets without job-level feedback. Review wrong-service and out-of-area calls.
United States, Canada and United Kingdom checks
United States: verify state and municipal licensing language, branch territories and overlap with Search, Performance Max and Local Services Ads. Keep emergency availability accurate.
Canada: align province, service radius and language. Ensure generated text and landing-page selection do not mix English and French journeys carelessly.
United Kingdom: check postcode coverage, call-out language, boiler and gas credentials, and the distinction between emergencies and quoted projects.
Availability and migration timing can vary by account. Base the decision on the controls visible in the actual account, not a screenshot from another market.
Questions to ask the agency
- Was AI Max deliberately enabled, inherited or automatically upgraded?
- Which ad groups use search-term matching?
- Are text customization and Final URL expansion on?
- Which URLs, brands, locations and terms are excluded?
- Have tracking templates been tested with dynamic pages?
- Which conversion actions guide bidding?
- How are generated claims and landing pages reviewed?
- Will results be judged by qualified leads, bookings and won jobs?
“Google's AI will optimize it” is not a test plan. A useful answer names the expansion, safeguards and business result that decides whether it stays.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Max a new Google Ads campaign type?
No. Google describes AI Max as an optimization layer inside an existing Search campaign. It can add search-term matching, text customization and Final URL expansion while retaining Search campaign structure.
Is AI Max the same as Performance Max?
No. AI Max extends Search campaigns. Performance Max is a separate campaign type designed to access inventory across several Google channels.
Does AI Max respect negative keywords?
Yes. Google says negative keywords continue to be respected when AI Max is enabled. Contractors should still review search terms because expanded matching can find new query patterns.
Should contractors enable AI Max automatically?
Not automatically. Verify conversion quality, landing pages, URL exclusions, location settings, brand controls, text claims and tracking templates. Test it against qualified leads, bookings and won jobs rather than conversion count alone.
